Your role first involves ensuring your passwords are not obvious and that they are stored in a secure location - in hard copy - not as an electronic file.

Keep Your Own PC Secure

In addition, you are strongly advised to ensure that your own PC is secured against malicious attacks. This is just as important as hosting web security. Almost everyone has virus/worm checking software now, but do you have a personal firewall application for your PC?

Hosting Web Security - Securing Your Tough Domains Account

We go to great lengths to ensure that your accounts are protected from hackers and malicious attacks, but you also have a responsibility to ensure that your passwords are both suitable and safe.

Hosting Web Security - Passwords

Password security is often overlooked in hosting web security, yet is one of the most important steps that you can take to improve the security of your data. The temptation is to select a single easy to remember password for use whenever one is needed, however this strategy is flawed.

Think about the number of passwords that you currently own: whether for web email, the office network, forums, memberships, subscriptions or your Tough Domains hosting account. Ask yourself how many of these passwords are the same? If, like most people, your have several identical passwords, then you should consider carefully the consequences of any single password being compromised.

For example, if a malicious hacker gains access to a password for an online forum, you may be alarmed and inconvenienced, but at least the hacker can do no more than post messages in your name. However, if that password is also used to administer a server that holds company accounts, you should be very concerned. A hacker will look for the simplest way to compromise a system and password guessing is an obvious starting point.

What can you do to improve your hosting web security?

You should never give your passwords to anyone. You should change passwords once in a while and make a discrete note of the password on paper somewhere for reference. If you discover that someone has come to know a password, change it as soon as possible.

You should try to make your passwords different and use a mixture of letters in upper and lower case, as well as numbers. Do not, however, use passwords such as:

  • a family or close friend's name

  • birthdays and other obvious family dates

  • any part of your family name

  • simple words like 'secret', 'password' or 'safe

  • do not use the same password as your user name

For example, use passwords similar in their construction to these:

  • 8ssYnx2

  • 7rd9fw3s

Do not forget to make a note of your new password somewhere when you next change it. Also, make sure that you keep a clearly marked, up to date, copy of all the files on your local hard disk. This may seem like a lot of trouble to go to, but with a proper password strategy in place you will have taken an important step in hosting web security.

Protection from viruses and worms

Most of you have virus checking software that will protect your PC, but how often do you update the virus definitions file? At minimum, update your virus definitions file once a week and ensure that the software is checking your emails as well.

Some products like Symantec's Norton Antivirus include LiveUpdate that assists you in scheduling your updates to be downloaded and installed automatically. You may also schedule virus checks to run automatically while you sleep.

Although Norton Antivirus comes pre-installed on many new PCs, the LiveUpdate features are usually only licensed for about 60-90 days. After this time, when Norton Antivirus attempts to download any updates you will get a message informing you that you need to subscribe for a year. The updates are not unreasonably priced for the peace of mind that they offer.

Alternatively, go to Tucows downloads and search for free virus checking software.

Personal firewall

A firewall gives you added protection against intruders by providing features to disallow certain domain names from accessing your machine. A firewall also provides control over which applications can connect to the Internet. This uses the same principles we use with our servers to enhance hosting web security.

The most popular option is Zone Alarm from zonelabs.com, and there is a free version for personal use. If you want a branded option Symantec also offer the Norton Desktop Firewall product. We have successfully used both of these products ourselves and find them stable and reliable applications.

Hosting Web Security Passwords

You should not store passwords in electronic files on your hard disk, as this is insecure. For example, one of the recent email worm viruses emailed a random file from your hard drive and passed it on to an unknown number of other email addresses!

Store them on old fashioned paper, in a secure, preferably fire-proof, location.

Many of the common maintenance tasks can be set to happen automatically and will not take much time to set up. The primary discipline to learn is to make a habit of making regular backups of the files on your PC. This will help enhance your own hosting web security setup.
